X-ray

Radiography, or X-ray, is the oldest and most frequently used form of medical imaging. The most common use of X-rays is to assist in identifying and treating fractures. Images of an injury can show our doctors even very fine hairline fractures or chips, while images produced after treatment ensure that a fracture has been properly aligned and stabilized for healing. Bone X-rays are used as an essential tool when we perform orthopaedic surgery, such as spinal repair, joint replacements or fracture reductions.

Open Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

Magnetic resonance imaging, or MRI, uses a magnetic field and a sophisticated computer system to give reliable and detailed images of the body. In orthopaedics, we use MRI for high quality images of soft tissue areas such as tendons, ligaments, and muscles. Our open MRI machine produces very clear images of the extremities, including the hand, wrist, elbow, shoulder, hip, knee, foot and ankle.

MRI can help provide information for a fast and accurate diagnosis and possibly reduce the need for exploratory surgery or other diagnostic procedures. Our open MRI machine was designed with your comfort in mind by providing spacious, stress-free accommodations for claustrophobic or larger patients.

Diagnostic Ultrasound

Ultrasound is an excellent tool for diagnosing the cause of real-time tendon and ligament pain. While we perform an ultrasound, you can point to where you’re hurting, and we can immediately get a look at that exact area as you’re moving and experiencing the pain. Many times, a patient’s pain seems to have no clear cause, but diagnostic ultrasound allows us an in-depth look at injuries, detecting tiny tears that an MRI might miss.

In addition, our doctors often use ultrasound guidance to administer injections to the optimal spot for healing. There is no radiation involved with ultrasounds, so they are safe for people with pacemakers, spinal cord stimulators, and other medical devices that cannot handle the radiation of other diagnostic tools.

Nerve Conduction Studies

Electromyography (EMG) and Nerve Conduction Velocity (NCV) are tests to help your orthopaedic doctor determine how well your muscles and nerves work. EMG is a test that measures the electrical nerve impulses in muscles to identify poor nerve input or poor nerve functioning. NCV measures how well a nerve works and can help specify the site of a nerve injury. EMG and NCV are often performed at the same time to help diagnose nerve compression or injury (such as carpal tunnel syndrome), nerve root injury (such as sciatica) or other nerve abnormalities associated with pain or numbness.

Custom Hand Splints

After an injury, the hand and fingers often need to be immobilized to allow the tissues to heal properly. In many cases, a splint is preferred over a cast because a splint can accommodate tissue swelling without becoming too tight. Splints limit movement to prevent further injury, but allow enough movement to increase your functional mobility. Our custom hand splints are made on site by a hand therapist to cushion and protect your injured area and promote healing.

PRP Therapy

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy is a revolutionary procedure that uses components of the body’s own blood cells to stimulate the natural healing process in certain orthopedic conditions.

The body’s first response to any soft tissue injury (ligaments and tendons) is to deliver platelet cells. Filled with healing and growth factors, platelets jump-start the repair process and attract the essential aid of stem cells. PRP therapy’s natural healing process accelerates the body’s efforts by delivering a higher concentration of platelets through a simple injection. It provides effective pain relief and faster healing, and it can eliminate the need for surgery and prolonged recovery.

PRP therapy is showing promising results with osteoarthritis of the knee, shoulder, hip and spine, as well as rotator cuff tears, chronic plantar fasciitis, anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries, tennis elbow, ankle sprains, tendonitis and ligament sprains.

Viscosupplementation

Viscosupplementation therapy is an appropriate treatment for people with knee arthritis that has failed to respond to more conservative therapy. A solution of hyaluronic acid is injected directly into the knee joint to restore the cushioning and lubricating properties of normal joint fluid. It is useful for people who are trying to delay surgery or are not candidates for knee replacement surgery. Viscosupplementation injections are typically given weekly for 3 or 4 weeks.

Enzyme Injection for Dupuytren's Disease

"Injectable collaganese (Xiaflex) has simplified and revolutionized the treatment of Dupytren's Disease. It is a safe, minimally invasive treatment alternative to surgery. I have had great success in treating significant contractures with a single injection. Patients have been thrilled when they leave the office with straight fingers after living many years with marked finger contractures. Best of all, it is essentially a painless procedure! Truly remarkable - Dupytren's surgery is going the way of the dinosaurs!"
