Screening student athletes.
The issue of sudden death in athletes usually comes to light only after the unfortunate loss of a student athlete. It involves the sudden death of an athlete due to unknown cardiac issues, usually undetected by standard pre-participation screening. Whereas collegiate and professional athletes are screened thoroughly for cardiac issues, most of our high school athletes are not. As an orthopedic surgeon, and chief of Orthopedic Surgery at St. Francis Hospital, I have teamed with the Pediatric Cardiology Department, with it's Director, Dr. Sean Levchuck, to provide the screening necessary to our student athletes. St. Francis Hospital will provide free cardiac screening to all student athletes. It is our goal to provide testing, at an elevated level, to all those who wish cardiac screening using non-invasive tests; electrocardiogram (EKG) and echocardiogram (a diagnostic test that utilizes ultrasound techniques to provide a 2 dimensional image of the heart). Our first screening date is Sunday, October 25th at the DeMatteis Center in Greenvale. Sign up for that date by Oct. 16th. Student athletes and their parents should read the attached information or feel free to contact me for any questions. Sign up material is also attached. You could also go to the St. Francis Hospital website at www.stfrancisheartcenter.com. Click on "Education and prevention programs". Please consider this for all athletes, especially those with a family history of cardiac disease.
